Теоретические научные исследования и практические разработки, финансируемые компанией с целью создания новых продуктов и средств производства, а также усовершенствования уже имеющихся продуктов и технологических процессов. Огромные расходы, необходимые для проведения исследований и внедрения разработок, в сочетании с риском, связанным с возможной неудачей при разработке конкурентоспособного продукта, под силу только крупным компаниям, которые способны финансировать проекты за счет текущей прибыли и распределять риск, вкладывая средства сразу в несколько проектов. Поэтому нередко утверждается, что именно монопольные и олигополистические рыночные структуры (см. Monopoly, Oligopoly) имеют больше возможностей проводить исследования и разработки, расходуя на них свою сверхприбыль. Однако, даже располагая дополнительными средствами, монополист часто лишен стимулов вкладывать их в исследования и разработки, поскольку его положение на рынке и так является стабильным. У олигополиста есть как финансовые возможности, так и стремление разрабатывать новые продукты, которые позволят ему снизить издержки производства, вывести на рынок новинки и установить конкурентное преимущество над другими компаниями.
